Customer Story: My Oak Creek Home did NOT Move during Hurricanes

December 18, 2020By American HomestarFeatured, Retail

Fire destroyed Ronald Beaugh’s onsite built home. But hurricanes were no match for his new Oak Creek Home. Ronald Beaugh has lived on the same street in Lake Charles, LA for over 40 years. In his own words, Ronald shares his story and shows why he believes his Oak Creek Home didn’t move or roll after Cat. 4 Hurricane Laura hit on August 29, 2020, and Cat. 2 Hurricane Delta made landfall on October 9, 2020. (see video above)

What makes Oak Creek Homes perform so well during storms?

With the series of customer testimonial from the recent storms in Louisiana, you may be wondering, “What makes Oak Creek Homes perform so well under extreme conditions when others failed?”  There are several key factors in answering this question.  It has to do with the following areas:

Weight

You may have heard us use the term #HeavyHome here on the website and on Facebook.  That’s because Oak Creek builds manufactured and modular homes with 1/3 more lumber then the HUD code requires.  We place exterior wall studs and floor joists every 16 inches, while the HUD code only requires a stud or joist every 24. More lumber means a heavier, more solid home that will stay put and withstand high winds better than a home that only meets the minimum requirements.

Smart Panel Siding

Smart Panel Siding be Louisiana Pacific is a tough, engineered wood product that is designed to withstand significant impacts, and is standard on all Oak Creek Homes.  Thanks to its proprietary SmartGuard® process, which involves a carefully formulated mix of resins, waxes and zinc borate with an overlay finish, the siding offers protection against prolonged exposure to rain and moisture to help avoid swelling and delamination. This makes it a great choice for siding in high wind regions.

Oak Creek Heavy Home

The two key indicators of a siding’s true strength are its wind and impact resistance—and LP SmartPanel siding excels on both fronts. In fact, our impact resistant siding can stand up to wind gusts of up to 200 mph, something you are likely to see during a potent hurricane. As for impact resistance, LP SmartPanel siding can stand up to golf ball-sized hail with a diameter up to 1.75 inches—talk about impact protection that can give you real peace of mind! See how LP SmartPanel siding withstands the impact of a fast-ball in this video demonstration and how it compares to vinyl and cement fiberboard.

47-Point Inspection

We ensure that our homes are installed to our specifications by paying a 3rd-party engineering firm to perform a full 47-point inspection*. Inspectors ensure that the manufactured home is set to our specifications in our installation manual, which meet or exceed HUD requirements in many cases.

They check for proper site drainage and proper placement of anchors, straps, and stabilizer plates, which are critical to the home remaining in place during high-wind events.

A 47-point inspection ensures all Oak Creek Homes are tied down securely (like the illustration above) near the I-beams with stabilizer plates and ground anchors.

This Oak Creek Home in the Cooling Springs Residential Community of Lake Charles, LA underwent a 47-point inspection. The home did not move after both Hurricane Laura hit on August 29, 2020 and Hurricane Delta blew through the area on October 9, 2020. The only damage to the home was caused by flying tree debris.

Inspectors also check ductwork connections, crossover connections and the marriage line on multi-section homes, just to name a few more key areas.  Furthermore, our contractors aren’t paid until we receive an inspection approval.  That way our service issues are minimized and you, the customer, have less to worry about over the life of your home.

*Inspection program not applicable to single section homes less than 18′ and a small number of other models. We do still require our 14’ and 16’ wide single-section homes to have pictures of the home setup reviewed by our compliance department.

An Engineer Documents the Quality Construction of his Oak Creek Home

Kenneth Unkel shares his Oak Creek Home in Kinder, LA with his two dogs. That’s Dusty you see sitting attentively as Kenneth snapped a picture of his home. Kenneth is an engineer. He says he purchased an Oak Creek home a few years ago because of its quality construction. “𝑰 𝒄𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒅 𝒕𝒆𝒍𝒍 𝒊𝒕 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒂 𝒉𝒆𝒂𝒗𝒊𝒆𝒓 𝒃𝒖𝒊𝒍𝒕 𝒉𝒐𝒎𝒆.” In his own words (in the video above), hear his story and see how his home withstood both Cat. 4 Hurricane Laura and Cat. 2 Hurricane Delta. Customer Story: Katina Daigle

Katina Daigle bought our top-selling model, the Silver Spur, after Hurricane Laura destroyed her first home in August of 2020. Katina lives on a rural piece of land in Eunice, LA. She said she bought an Oak Creek Home to replace her previous one after doing some research online and visiting our Oak Creek Homes Center in Lake Charles. She said our quality construction and design made the difference. Once she saw the models on the lot, she said she fell in love.

Katina’s new manufactured home was barely three weeks old when she learned that Hurricane Delta was on the way. She wondered how her new home would do? In the video above, in her own words, and with pictures she graciously shared with us, Katina shares her emotional journey and gratitude for purchasing an Oak Creek Home.

Customer Story: Shawn Lewis – Cooling Springs Residential Community

November 10, 2020By American HomestarFeatured, Retail

Every Oak Creek Home in Louisiana Community Withstood Back to Back Hurricanes

Customer Shawn Lewis told us hurricanes were no match for her Oak Creek Home, along with three other Oak Creek Homes in her community! Cat. 4 Hurricane Laura touched down on August 27, 2020. Six, weeks later, Cat. 2 Hurricane Delta made landfall on October 9, 2020. Both hurricanes hit Cooling Springs Residential Community in Lake Charles, Louisiana hard! Over 100+ manufactured homes were destroyed or are unlivable. Shawn Lewis, a single mother of two young boys, had only lived in her new Oak Creek Home a few weeks before the first hurricane hit. In her own words, (in the video above), Shawn described what she saw returning back to her community and home for the first time. She shared many personal pictures she took as well.

Gallery of Destroyed Homes in Cooling Springs Residential Community

Shawn expressed, “It was very heart-breaking… I came around the corner, I seen they had trailers broken in half on the ground, windows blown out… They had a trailer twisted and flipped to the side. Two of them like rolled over.” She added, “There’s one that I don’t know what happened. It looks like it exploded. There was no ceiling. No roof. I mean that’s all there was was the floor. and it was gone.”

All manufactured and mobile homes shown below were NOT built by Oak Creek Homes.

Shawn Lewis’s Oak Creek Home had little to no Damage

Shawn was thankful that her Oak Creek Home was not damaged. “I was totally totally blessed. No damage from the hurricane at all.” She added, “The only thing that happened, my air conditioner tilted onto the trailer. It didn’t even fall off the block.” Other than that she said, “The only thing I had to really really do is relevel the house.” She attributed the quality construction of her home as the reason that her home did so well, when others just feet away were destroyed.  Before she bought her Oak Creek Home, Shawn went online and did her homework. “I did some research. And I found these homes are made a little bit better. Oak Creek Homes are very solid.” Shawn noted that even the guys that came to relevel her home noted the quality construction of her home. They said, “Oh, Lord, an Oak Creek Home… man those things are heavy… that joker ain’t gonna move.”

3 More Oak Creek Homes in Cooling Springs had little to no Damage

We spotted three more Oak Creek Homes in The Cooling Springs Residential Community. Each had little to no damage. We spoke the Harvey, who owns the yellow manufactured home pictured below, he says the only damage to his home was caused by flying tree debris which broke a window and caused some damage to his roof. The other two homes, which are both our Top Selling Silver Spur model, had no damage other than some minor bent metal edges and some damaged skirting.

The Oak Creek Difference

Oak Creek Homes are builtstrong with quality materials. We build a heavier and sturdier home than our competitors per J.D. Valuation Guides. We can prove it here. We use hurricane/wind straps to secure the frame and structure. Additionally, we also use a 47-point inspection on all homes 18′ or wider to make sure each home is tied down and secured safely. Plus, we use no vinyl siding on the outside of our homes. Instead, Oak Creek Homes uses a 50-year warranty Smart Panel siding.  Smart Panel is an engineered wood siding that resists harsh weather and impact damage.

Oak Creek Homes Withstood Two Hurricanes

Nancy and Charles Noland’s Oak Creek Home withstood NOT one, but TWO HURRICANES! Hear their story and see how well their home stood up to both Cat. 4 Hurricane Laura and then six weeks later, Cat. 2 Hurricane Delta. The Nolands live in the Sugarloaf Community of Lake Charles, LA, which houses 240+ manufactured homes. We visited with the couple about a week after Hurricane Delta hit the Louisiana area on October 9, 2020. Nearly all the homes in this community were destroyed by both hurricanes. The Noland’s home was not one of them. They said it’s all because of the solid construction of their Oak Creek Home.
